Three persons, including a national-level wrestler have been arrested for committing a heist of ₹65 lakh in south-east Delhi’s Sarita Vihar, the police said on Wednesday.
DCP (Special Cell) P.K. Kushwah said that the arrested robbers have been identified as Rajesh, Sunil and Yogender Saroya. They were arrested from different locations in the city. Sunil and Rajesh were arrested on Monday, while Yogendra was nabbed on Wednesday
Sunil is a national-level wrestler. He had won silver medal in a State-level wrestling championship held in Delhi in 2008. He had also participated in National Wrestling Championship held at Kanyakumari. He had left wrestling after he sustained a serious injury on the shoulder.
On September 1, Mohammad Shazeb, who deals with foreign currency exchange along with his brother Nazim, closed his office and left for home with a bag filled with ₹65 lakh. The brothers left on two motorcycles.
Around 9 p.m., some men on two motorcycles waylaid Mr. Shazeb’s two-wheeler and attempted to rob him of the cash at gunpoint. When Mr. Shazeb resisted, one of them shot at him. They then robbed him of the money and fled.
A case was registered at Sarita Vihar police station in the matter.
First arrest
“We alerted our informers and deployed sources in and around Delhi. Technical surveillance was mounted by a Special Cell team. We managed to arrest Yogender, a resident of Shahbad Dairy naerly a month later. A countrymade pistol with three live cartridges were seized from his possession,” added Mr. Kushwah
Yogender revealed the names of his accomplices involved in the robbery during interrogation, and two other accused were arrested during multiple raids.
“They later revealed that Sunil, the kingpin of the gang, had got information from one Gaurav of Bawana that Mr. Shazeb used to carry lumpsum amount of money on a daily basis. A plan was hatched and the robbery was committed,” Mr. Kushwah.
The accused also disclosed that they had distributed the robbed amount after the heist. Sunil had purchased a second-hand SUV, while Rajesh had made a down payment of ₹2.5 lacs for purchasing a new MUV.
The vehicles purchased have been recovered and seized. The three arrested accused, after the robbery, spent over ₹4 lakh in Goa, Kolhapur, Mumbai and other places partying.

“We have recovered ₹7.5 lakh of the robbed booty and a sum of ₹6 lakh has been frozen. Two sophisticated pistols along with nine live cartridges have been seized. One SUV and an MUV, which the accused had purchased with the robbed money have been seized,” Mr. Kushwah said.
