Three men were arrested for their alleged involvement in an inter-State racket that specialised in the sale and supply of spurious drugs. Ten cartons of fake drugs estimated to be worth Rs. 50 lakh were recovered from their possession, the Crime Branch said on Thursday.

Identified as Amit Dua (37), Manoj (43), and Gulab Singh (36), the trio was found to have been involved in the racket for several years and used to deal in widely-consumed and everyday drugs to escape scrutiny, said Ravindra Yadav, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime).

“Information was received on April 27 that Manoj, who resides somewhere in Paharganj, indulges in the sale, supply and purchase of spurious drugs. The input entailed that Manoj had stocked spurious drugs in a godown in the same area which he would be visiting with a fresh batch of such drugs,” said Mr. Yadav.

“The information was shared with officers of the Drug Enforcement Department which is under the Delhi Government. Drug inspectors were deputed by the department to conduct a raid and Manoj was arrested during the raid,” he said.

The police claimed three cartons of Zerodol-SP tablets, two cartons of Pantop-D capsules, and five cartons of Pantop-DSR containing spurious drugs were found in the godown.

At the instance of Manoj, the police said, a raid was conducted at a factory in SAS Nagar in Mohali from where a strip-packing machine used to pack capsules and tablets, three cartons of Pantop-DSR tablets, three cartons of Zifi-200 tablets, three cartons of Althrocin tablets, and three cartons of Mesacol tablets were recovered. The other two accused, Dua and Singh, were arrested on the factory premises.

“In 2003, Dua shifted to Lucknow and started business of spurious drugs. In 2005, he along with Manoj and Satish were arrested in a case of spurious drugs. Soon after coming out of jail, he started working with his elder brother Rajesh in the same business,” said Mr. Yadav.

“Meanwhile, he also met “Manoj Topi” who was arrested earlier in a spurious drugs case and lodged in jail, who introduced him to Gulab Singh, brother-in-law of Manoj Topi. Amit with the help of Gulab Singh, took over the factory of Manoj Topi, and started manufacturing and supply of spurious drugs. He along with Gulab Singh was apprehended at the instance of Manoj who was initially arrested in the present case,” he added.
