A delegation of officials from Corporation, Police and Highways Department carried out a joint inspection on the progress of the flyover construction at Gandhipuram on Tuesday.

The team also discussed the possibilities and steps required for decongesting Gandhipuram.

Mayor P. Rajkumar, Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan, City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan along with officials from Corporation, police and highways department were present during the inspection.

After the inspection Mr. Rajkumar told The Hindu that Corporation officials were asked to study the possibility of temporarily shifting the bus stands, widening the road the road and considering steps that could be initiated to ease traffic congestion so as to enable the construction of the flyover with ease.

The inspection was to ascertain the role of the Corporation in ensuring speedy construction of the flyover, he said.

“A meeting for Corporation, police and highway officials would soon be conducted to initiate steps to decongest Gandhipuram,” he added.

City Police Commissioner A.K. Viswanathan said that heavy congestion on the Hundred Feet Road has been an increasing issue of concern.

“We are studying the possibility of diverting traffic from Sathy Road and Mettupalayam Road to help people reach the city with ease and to reduce congestion on Hundred Feet Road and GP Junction,” he said.

The Police Commissioner also hinted that parking allowed on one side of the road in busy areas would soon be stopped – similar to the ‘No parking’ that was brought into effect on a stretch of Oppanakara Street from Monday.

Meanwhile, top Corporation and police officials also visited a couple of places near the bus stand and nearby areas to study the possibility of shifting three temples.

These temples are at present located on the Dr.Nanjappa Road stretch where the flyover construction work was in progress. Officials said that the places would be finalised in a few days – after discussing the issue with the Collector.

The places would then be given as an option to the organisations that are opposing the shifting of temples.

Identifying new places for temple shifting began after the place suggested by them at Kattur was rejected by religious outfits.
