Residents oppose move to demolish TNHB houses

Published - December 25, 2012 12:19 pm IST - Coimbatore:

Residents of several areas in Ward 97 have petitioned the district administration to stop the Tamil Nadu Housing Board (TNHB) from demolishing the existing houses to construct new buildings for them.

A group of residents living around the areas of Gandhi Nagar, Murugan Nagar, Rajiv Gandhi Nagar, and Pillaiyarpuram submitted a petition to Collector M. Karunagaran during the grievance meeting here on Monday.

The residents stated that more than 1,500 families have been residing in these areas for more than 20 years now with many of them having been issued ration cards and pattas.

However, in recent days government officials were surveying their land to construct multi-storied houses after demolishing the existing ones.

The residents said that they were content with their present houses and also that they would have nowhere to go if they were demolished. Instead of constructing new houses, they urged the Collector to issue pattas to all families.

Narikuravas petition Collector

A group of members from the Narikurava community living in the city has petitioned the district administration seeking ration cards.

In a petition to Collector M. Karunagaran during the grievance meeting here on Monday, they said that a group of 60 families had been living at a particular locality for the past 15 years.

About nine years ago, all their old ration cards were taken away and new ones issued.

However, only half the families received their new ration cards and the rest have been unable to collect their free rice or avail of any government concession.

One of the persons said that they were submitting the petition to the Collector for the fourth time.
