Demanding that the existing road be widened, residents of Alagapuram Periya Pudur blocked the Yercaud Main Road here on Friday.

Residents said that there are over 23,000 people living in the area and the existing road is the only link to the Yercaud Main Road.

Most of the school vans use the road as it serves as a link road with schools located in the area.

Also, the vehicles need not take additional four km to reach the destination.

Currently, the DIG office is also being constructed along the road. Hence, it a busy stretch throughout the day, they added.

The existing road is located at the rear end of the Salem Central Prison and prison officials claim that the land belongs to them.

However, the residents said that the existing road area belongs to revenue department and wanted it to be widened.

Police and revenue officials rushed to the spot and pacified them. The arterial road witnessed traffic congestion and normalcy returned after 30 minutes.

Later, the protestors submitted a petition to revenue officials.
