Nutmeg farmers in Pollachi region have come together to form a community to revolutionise nutmeg trade.

In 2022, a group of 50 farmers banded together and were able to get ₹470 for a kg of nutmeg as against ₹440 a kg of market price. This year, 85 farmers have joined the community to establish a Farmer Producer Organisation.

Though the prices at present are ₹370 a kg, the farmers are planning to sell at ₹470 a kg.

In August, the farmers sold six tonnes of nutmeg at ₹470 a kg to a new buyer, who has also placed orders for 25 tonnes to be sourced directly from the farmers.

From September 13 to 15, around 85 farmers from 24 villages in Anamalai and Kerala converged at the Sri Ram Murugan Kalyana Mandapam in Kottur village. The farmers have been organised into groups so that they can pool in their resources.

The sale, which is the fifth such collective sales, is expected to have fetched ₹1.17 crore worth business.
