With the discharge from Stanley Reservoir into River Cauvery continues to be over 2.05 lakh cusecs, more houses in the district were flooded on Saturday. Likewise, with a drop in discharge into River Bhavani, water started to recede in the evening.

Houses located in high altitude areas in Bhavani, Karungalpalayam and Kodumudi were flooded and families were moved to safer locations. Since the discharge from Stanley Reservoir into the Cauvery is expected to increase, officials have asked people to move to the flood relief camps.

As water from Pugaluran Canal in Kodumudi continues to flood houses located at Kombupalayam, Kasipalayam and at Eluppu Thoppu, more people were evacuated and moved to safer locations.

People said that water from River Cauvery entered the canal which in turn had flooded their houses. Many temples, brick kiln units and graveyards located near the river were submerged.

Three bridges connecting Bhavani with Kumarapalayam, Parisal Thurai with Kokkarayanpettai and Karungalpalayam with Pallipalayam were closed for traffic for the third consecutive day. Vehicle users from Namakkal district used the bridge on the barrage at Vendipalayam.

Also, motorists used the new bridge constructed across River Cauvery at Pallipalayam.

A cow and its calf remain stranded on the premises of Nattratreeswarar Temple at Kangayampalayam in Modakurichi block as the temple is completely surrounded by water.

Despite warning from people, an elderly man entered the river at Padithurai near Kasi Viswanathar Temple in Bhavani to bath and drowned. The body was retrieved and Bhavani police are in the process of identifying the victim.

The police registered cases against 13 persons for taking selfie from bridges and at places near the rivers where warning boards were placed against such activities.

People in Bhavani Sagar, Sathyamangalam and Gobichettipalayam heaved a sign of relief as the discharge from Bhavani Sagar Reservoir was reduced from 40,000 cusecs to 20,000 cusecs in the evening. As the flow of water dropped, water started to recede from houses and agricultural lands.

However, officials warned people not to return immediately and wait for their houses to get dry.

Conservancy workers started to clean the streets and roads, and sprayed bleaching power in the areas.

Revenue officials started to identify the damaged houses and crops for compensation to be given to the affected people and farmers.

At 4 p.m. the water level stood at 100.68 feet, while the inflow was 23,520 cusecs and the outflow, 17,700 cusecs into the river and 2,300 cusecs into the canal.

A total of 7,832 persons - 3,375 men, 3,133 female and 1,324 children - continue to be in the flood relief camps in the district.
