A meeting of activists and NGOs to discuss measures to protect the Ooty Race Course as well as other wetlands in the Nilgiris was organised here on Monday.

G. Janardhanan, president of the Ooty Public Awareness Association, said that the meeting discussed the need to identify the remaining wetlands in the Nilgiris and ensure steps are taken to prevent them from being destroyed by constructions.

The president of the association said that discussions were also held to come up with ideas to pressurise the district administration into ensuring that the Ooty Race Course is not turned into a parking lot.

A wetland and swamp protection committee has also been set up with the inclusion of five NGOs, which will meet regularly and discuss the threats facing each wetland in the district.
