Coimbatore District Police have registered a case against J. Senthilkumar (31), a civil engineer, on Saturday – the day before his marriage – for allegedly cheating his lover who is working in London by marrying another woman.

The man was booked under sections 417 (punishment for cheating) and 506(i) (for criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code. But he was not arrested and the police also said they have not taken steps to stop Senthilkumar’s marriage.

The case was registered based on a complaint from C. Vathanamalar (53), the mother of the 31-year-old woman, who is working in the United Kingdom.

Thudiyalur All Woman Police Station (AWPS) personnel said that the victim was from Amarjothi Nagar near Thudiyalur. Senthilkumar was the friend of the girl’s cousin and they came to know each other when they visited her house here almost eight years ago.

On getting his consent, the girl went to London to work in a hotel in 2011. She came to India in August.

According to the complaint, the woman asked him to marry her, but he refused and is also said to have threatened her. Meanwhile, her holiday visa was drawing to an end and she flew back to London.

Inquiry revealed that the girl came to know that Senthilkumar was engaged to another girl and they were to get married at Palani on Sunday. The woman’s mother tried to lodge a complaint with the police at Tiruchi (where he works) and at Dharapuram (his hometown). But her effort was in vain. Finally, she managed to get the complaint registered in Thudiyalur.

Thudiyalur AWPS Inspector S. Amutha said that they inquired the woman in London over phone and she has claimed that the allegations were true. The police also questioned Senthilkumar, who reportedly cited other reasons for not marrying her.

He also denied sexually abusing her.
