Helpline for senior citizens receive over 470 calls

The district police received 477 calls and resolved 451 calls under the “Hello Seniors” scheme that aims at resolving the problems of senior citizens by receiving complaints over the phone.

The scheme was launched on January 15 this year and senior citizens can call dial 96558-88100 and lodge complaints related to family disputes or disturbances to them in the public. The police received 477 calls of which 118 calls were related to family dispute, 43 related to property dispute, burglary (13 calls), altercations (57), cheating (64), other problems (141 calls). As many as 41 calls were received appreciating the scheme while 39 calls were made for problems in other districts. Calls from other district were asked to contact their respective district police for getting their grievance redressed.

Superintendent of Police S. Sakthi Ganesan said that a 65-year-old visually challenged man had approached the police in the last week of May alleging that his four sons had refused to take care of him and his wife and sought monthly maintenance from them. Veerappanchatiram police held inquiries with the four sons and later asked them to provide monthly maintenance to their parents. Later, they agreed to pay ₹ 8,000 monthly to their parents and the police continue to monitor whether money is paid regularly or not, he added.

Mr. Sakthi Ganesan asked the affected seniors to utilise the scheme and get their grievance redressed.
