Panapalli tribal settlement had an early Deepavali celebration as the Department of Civil Engineering of Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology organised a Green Deepavali at the Panchayat Union Primary School here recently.
The event brought cheers to the tribal settlement as children, elders and engineering students together celebrated the festival with a focus on protecting the environment.
Social worker Joshua G.P.N. from Anaikatti said that similar Deepavali celebrations were organised at Dhumanur, Jambukandi and Kondanur tribal settlements in the previous years.
Nestled in Anaikatti hills, the primary school has 24 students from class I to V. As many as 15 students of the anganwadi at the settlement also joined them. As part of the celebrations, a short film on the need to protect environment was screened for the students and residents of the tribal settlement. An awareness sessions on the ill effects of littering single use plastic products was also organised.
Arts and sports events were also organised at the celebrations in which firecrackers were not used. While prizes were given away for winners of various competitions, lunch and sweets were served to all.
The student volunteers and the faculty also created a vegetable garden for the school, produces of which will be used for midday meals. Students were also given pencils which have seeds of vegetables.
