Free anti-rabies vaccination camp held

A free anti-rabies vaccination camp was held in Namakkal on Saturday.

C.Balachandran, Vice-Chancellor, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, inaugurated the camp at the Veterinary College and Research Institute as part of the World Rabies Day observance.

The camp was jointly organised by the Veterinary College and Research Institute, Department of Animal Husbandrym and Tamil Nadu Milk Producers Co-operative Federation Limited of Namakkal. T. Tensingh Gnanaraj, Registrar, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, and other senior officials took part in the event.

In the camps held across the district, 155 dogs were vaccinated at the veterinary institute in Namakkal. In the camps held in each taluks, 830 dogs were vaccinated in Namakkal, 1,120 dogs in Tiruchengode, 970 dogs in Rasipuram, 290 dogs in Mohanur, 450 dogs in Sendamangalam, 500 dogs in Kumaramangalam, 150 dogs in Kolli Hills and 700 dogs in Paramathi. As many as 330 dogs were vaccinated at the Aavin bulk milk cooling unit here. Close to 250 veterinarians and students were involved in the camp.

WHO statistics

Dr. Balachandran said that according to the World Health Organisation statistics, most number of deaths due to rabies occur in India. He said that such camps were being conducted across the State to end human deaths due to rabies by 2030.
