On Sunday morning the residents of Ward 73 were a disappointed lot. The civic body did supply water but in a few pockets it was reportedly contaminated with sewage.
Residents on Vysial Street, particularly those around the Big Bazaar Police station and Vasavi school, complained that the water was dark and with odour. A few residents also took to social networking sites to vent their anger.
B. Sanjeev, a resident, said when they opened the taps on Sunday morning, they found the water coloured and carrying a foul odour. Later when they checked the sump at homes, they found that too contaminated.
Corporation Commissioner K. Vijayakarthikeyan responded to residents’ complaint saying that he had directed his engineers to look into the issue and ensure clean supply of water at the earliest.
Corporation engineers said the water colour did not mean that the water was contaminated with sewage. The discolouration could be due to iron from the cast iron pipes used for water supply.
The increase in gap between two water supply days led to water getting stagnated in the pipe and reacting with the iron. They had received similar complaints from a few areas in the area and when they checked it was not due to sewage mixing with drinking water but iron.
Nevertheless, they would check the Vysial Street problem in a day or two as they would have to complete the water supply cycle before starting the digging work, they said.
