Unidentified persons entered the house of a retired assistant professor and decamped with 70 sovereigns of gold jewellery in Modachur, Gobichettipalayam on Tuesday, October 24, 2023.

The incident took place when both Arjunan, 61, and his wife, Sabeetha, had left their home to attend a relative’s wedding in Anthiyur. They came back to their home on Tuesday night, and found the kitchen door broken, and jewellery in the almirah missing.

The Gobichettipalayam police were informed, and a sniffer dog and fingerprint experts were pressed into service. Police found 30 sovereigns of gold jewellery in a bag lying near the compound wall and believe it could have been dropped by the burglars accidentally.

Inquiries revealed that the couple had a daughter, whose wedding was to be held next month, and, in preparation for this, they had 100 sovereigns of jewellery in the house.

Painting and renovation work was recently undertaken at the house, and police are investigating the workers involved.

The police also scrutinised CCTV footage in the area and have registered a case.
