Awareness campaign on girl child abuse launched

FICCI Ladies Organisation launched ‘Shakthi’ an awareness campaign on girl child abuse, at Coimbatore Seva Nilayam - a home for the orphaned and destitute girls - on Saturday. District social welfare officer R. Ambika inaugurated the event along with district child protection officers.

According to a press release from FLO, sessions were jointly conducted by Art of Living and trained volunteers.

They educated inmates of the Nilayam on issues such as abuse of girls and women, preventing a potential dangerous situation, differentiating good touch and bad touch and gauging abusive overtures and behaviour from close relatives and friends and dealing with such situations, it said.

They were also elaborated on their legal rights and how to cope with such situations and coping up with feelings of guilt, shame and alienation.

As part of the initiative, FLO will conduct one hour sessions for school-going girls from 5{+t}{+h}to 12{+t}{+h}standard at underprivileged schools, government and government aided schools before organising it in urban and private schools, the press release added.

Seminar

A seminar on organ donation awareness was jointly organised by Coimbatore Rotary Heritage and Sree Abirami Hospital at Sree Abirami College of Nursing, on Saturday.

Rotary District Governor Venugopal Menon inaugurated the conference in the presence of the managing director of the hospital P. Periyaswamy, a release said.

Consultant laparoscopic surgeon and co-ordinator of the cadaveric transplant team R. Senthilkumar delivered a lecture on organ donation.

Short films on organ donation were screened at the event.

The family of an organ donor was honoured on the occasion.
