Thirteen persons, including four children, allegedly engaged as bonded labourers in a rice mill at Red Hills in Tiruvallur district, were rescued by a team of Revenue officials on Thursday.

Tip-off

According to official sources in the International Justice Mission (IJM), a non-governmental organisation working for the eradication of bonded labour, the IJM recently received a tip-off that around 20 persons were engaged as bonded labourers in the rice mill at Ambedkar Nagar, Red Hills.

Surprise check

The matter was brought to the attention of district revenue authorities, who conducted a surprise check on the establishment on Thursday.

They found the workers being engaged as bonded labourers.

Thus, 13 persons – 9 adults and 4 children – were rescued from the rice mill, sources said.
