Seven of the nine convicts in the 1998 serial bomb blasts, who were released on September 15 after remission of sentence, on Saturday, sought financial assistance to start a new life.
The convicts, set free following the State government’s decision to grant remission to mark the birth centenary of Dravida Munnettra Kazhagam (DMK) founder C.N. Annadurai, said they were distanced from family and society after having been in prison for long.
In a memorandum submitted to Police Commissioner P. Sivanandi, they requested him to make arrangements for finance to start business and lead a decent life along with the family members.
The nine, belonging to banned Al-Umma, were sentenced to life by a special court.
The bomb blasts which occurred during the election campaign visit of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader L.K. Advani had killed 58 people and left around 200 people injured.
