The Nilgiris District Police and the District Administration have mooted the adoption of tribal hamlets that are located close to Kerala, where Maoist movement is on the rise.

Hotel and industrial associations and NGOs have been asked to work on improving the standard of living of the people in areas where the government was not able to reach out.

A senior police officer told The Hindu that there were 54 tribal villages and hamlets in the State that were located close to Kerala and Karnataka.

The organisations had been asked to work on five core areas — education, healthcare, basic amenities, employment, and sports and culture — in these hamlets.

Sponsors had evinced interest in visiting the hamlets along with police and Forest Department personnel on Friday to study the requirements and work on solutions to bridge the gap.
