Eliza Doolittle

Buy? For pop fans.

Given that Eliza Sophie Caird a.k.a Eliza Doolittle is only 22, she does have the potential. She has a very expressive and a clear voice. I didn't have to strain to listen to what she was singing. She has co-written all the songs in the album.

Eliza doesn't try hard to impress you; there are no heavy dance beats or unwanted remixes. The songs are soft and pleasant to listen to. It will remind you of the kind of songs in the Apple commercials or in a teen flick. The songs have a heavy British pop influence. Not many people might like it and that, is what sets this album apart from the drivel churned out by the music industry these days (think Kesha).

This album definitely grows on you as you listen to it.

The entire album is meant for teenagers and it does not miss that mark. You can listen to this album without having to think too much about what the artist is trying to convey, or decipher the hidden messages and have huge forum discussions about them. An album for those lazy, happy, sunny days.

My favourites: Mr. Medicine and Pack Up

KT Tunstall

Buy? Of course!

There is no point hiding it, I like this album. The songs are a departure from her usual style and frankly, it has only gotten better. I have tremendous respect for artists who really get involved in their work.

In the times where you see “musicians” who are out just to make a quick buck with someone writing the songs for them, and heavily engineered vocals to fix whatever was wrong, KT actually writes, sings and plays an instrument or two in each song. She has even provided some artwork for the album cover.

There wasn't a song in the album that felt like a filler. Each song has been finely crafted and well executed. The Entertainer just won't get out of my head! The best part of the entire album is in the lyrics and the way it has been sung. KT makes sure you get what she is trying to say. For me that is the ultimate achievement of the album. If you can get your message out, if you can make the person who buys your album understand why you made it, there can be no bigger satisfaction. KT Tunstall definitely gets her message across.

My favourites: Uummannaq Song, Push that knot away, Difficulty and The Entertainer.

Mahesh Ratnam, engineering graduate.
