There is a huge statue of a Chinese warrior in the front, a clatter of vessels and grills as chefs work in the wide open kitchen dishing out sushi rolls and dim sums. We are at China Bistro, on the 12th Main in Indiranagar.

The menu goes beyond China, with delicacies from South East Asia and the Far East, making its way in the menu.

The décor is modern and the open kitchen adds to the general ambience. As the chef shouts out the instructions, one almost feels transported right to the bustling streets of China.

We start the meal with a sampling of the asparagus tempura roll and the prawn tempura roll — straight from the live sushi counter. Though not a big fan of vegetarian variants of sushi, the asparagus roll wins us over with its perfect balance of flavours and taste. The rather crunchy and light prawn tempura preparation is also a must try. For those who love pulled cheese, the zing ping swing roll is a must have. This one comes with roasted vermicelli covering offering the extra zing.

Moving on to dimsums, we are impressed with the size and large fillings they come packed with. Served with an assortment of sauces, we enjoy them, packed with veggies and meat. Next we binge on chicken and prawn varieties.

For those looking for a twist from the usual Chinese fare, lobster dumplings in beetroot sauce is excellent. Filled with lobster and a hint of garlic, this one is come with a range of flavours. We also enjoy the grilled fish in garlic sauce. It is cooked well, is packed with flavours and does offer the rather clichéd ‘melt-in-the-mouth’ sensation.

The Korean barbecue chicken, basically spicy barbecued chicken, served with a smattering of black pepper is superb and goes well with chicken hakka noodles, that is filled with crunchy vegetables. We also dig into the Thai green curry, served with liberal portions of jasmine rice. Both work well together and leave no scope for complaints. We finish the meal with portions of a sweet and gooey caramelised pudding.
