A total of 900 kg of bread, cake and biscuits that had been stocked beyond their expiry dates were seized and destroyed on Tuesday by Health Department officials of the Chennai Corporation from bakeries and shops.

A press release said that 321 establishments were inspected, of which 115 bakeries were selling eatables not fit for consumption. The officials also found that more than 800 workers engaged in bakeries did not have Food Handlers Licences. Officials advised the bakeries to not stock food products beyond their expiry date and to get the licences.

A total of 140 kg of cashewnuts and other dry fruits were also seized from the Periamet area.
