Physical exercises that improve muscle strength, coordination and balance can reduce the chance of a fall happening to people with a balance disorder, according to advice published by Germany’s Professional Association of Ear, Nose and Throat Doctors.

There’s a range of therapeutic exercises that can help patients deal with dizziness and which can be performed at home. The association also recommends taking some time to remove anything from the home that might cause a person to trip. Adequate lighting and comfortably fitting shoes can also help avoid a fall.

According to the association, elderly people who do not exercise regularly are more prone to falling over as they are in poor physical condition. They also suffer from more complications than elderly people who are fitter.

Dizziness is caused by a problem with the body’s sense of balance.

An affected person has the feeling they are swaying or spinning and soon lose their sense of orientation. Nausea is another common symptom.
