If you’ve adopted a companion animal or are considering it, here are some tips to be a model pet owner.

Don’t adopt when you’re not sure : Unsure if you’ll have the time to care for a pet? Is there conflict in the family about the idea? Did you sign a no-pet clause as a tenant when you moved in? If the answer was yes to any of these questions, don’t get a pet until you’ve figured out a solution.

Don’t miss a vaccination schedule : Get a vaccination card from your vet and pin it up somewhere to ensure that you don’t forget a cycle.

Don’t self-medicate : Never administer human medication to your pet based on internet research or personal experience. Many pet owners are devastated when they administer Crocin (or equivalents like Paracetamol) to pets, as the pets die painful deaths when given these tablets, and even a small quantity creates toxicity. Always make a doctor’s visit instead.

Don’t give human snacks : Raisins, chocolates, onions and spicy food are dangerous for dogs. Get a list from the vet about what’s allowed.

Don’t make a pet fend for itself : Going out of town for a while? Find a reputed kennel that friends and family recommend or request a relative to take care of the pet. Cats can be left at home if the relative can drop by and feed them during the day, whereas dogs can be at the relative’s place until you return.

Don’t gift a pet : It’s a long-term decision that should be taken only by the potential owner and not given to him or her as a surprise.

Don’t inconvenience others : If your dog soils a common area, clean up after him. Ensure he is on leash in common areas, even if he’s docile. Give him freedom within the house and don’t keep him tied habitually.
