Remembering Annamayya

Annamayya's 603rd Jayanthi was celebrated with a competition in Annamayya compositions.

‘Nada Sudha Tarangini Trust (of eminent vocalist Nedunuri Krishnamurthy) and Alivelumanga Sarvaiah Charitable Trust, Hyderabad jointly held a musical event at Sundarayya Vignana Kalakendram recently celebrating Annamayya's 603rd Jayanthi. Nedunuri , composer of many Annamacharya kirtanas was present on the occasion and gave away prizes to the winners in the competition held by these trusts. He spoke of greatness of Annamacharya's sahitya that became fodder for many composers and singers today. Opportunity was also given to the first prize winners B.Vasantalakshmi and S.Navamallika to render an Annamayya composition.

Vasa Gopinath, lecturer in Government College of Music and Dance, rendered select compositions of Annamacharya set to music by Nedunuri Krishnamurthy. sahitya They included Korudu Naamadi' in Saveri, Bhavamulona Bahyamunadunu' in Suddha Dhanyasi, Harigolichiyu Aparamula' in Dharmavati with ragalapana , Inni Chaduvanela , Intavetukanela'tatvam and Adideva Paramatma' in Sindhubhairavi – with sahitya bhava .

The second musical session was that of Neeta Chandrasekhar and her disciples. Neeta is music lecturer in Telugu University. The compositions chosen by her were all of varied appeal. Sakala Santikaramu Sarvesa' in Bahudhari, Ramabhadra Raghuveera' in Anandabhairavi, Ghora Duritamulache' in Hamsanandi, Iddarigunambulivi Intulaala' in Kapi and Neevokkadavechalu Neerajaksha' in Behag were presented by them.

R.Dinakar on violin, Jayabhasker on mridangam and Gunarajan on tabla lent support.
