The Indian Institute of Information Technology Design & Manufacturing (IIITD&M), Kancheepuram, has increased the intake of B. Tech students from 20 to 30 in each stream, with two seats in each stream reserved under the DASA (Direct Admission to Students Abroad) scheme.
IIITD&M is a Centre of Excellence established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in 2007. The first batch of students was admitted to the Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing). Subsequently, B.Tech programmes in Electronics Engineering (D&M) and Computer Engineering were introduced.
“The three B. Tech programmes offered are the first of their kind IT-enabled design and manufacturing focused engineering programmes in the country. They augment the conventional mechanical engineering, electronics & communication / electrical & electronics and computer science engineering with design and manufacturing issues in the respective engineering sectors. The curricula of these programmes have been framed by the Senate (Academic Advisory Council) of the institute involving leading academicians from IITs, IISc, experts from relevant industries and faculty members of the institute,” said Prof. R. Gnanamoorthy, director of the institute.
M. Des (Master of Design) programmes in Electronic Systems Design and Mechanical Systems Design has been offered since August 2010 with the objective of specialising mechanical and electrical / electronics engineers with design skills required for the design and development of mechanical and electronic products.
Admissions to the M.Des programmes are based on GATE / CEED scores. These novel and innovative programmes have attracted students from all over India and in the case of B.Tech high ranking AIEEE students have been admitted to the institute. The institute has also been offering inter-disciplinary Ph.D programmes in Computer, Electronics, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering, Physics and Mathematics since 2009.
“The placement record of the first batch of students specialising in Mechanical Engineering (Design & Manufacturing) has been very impressive. Around 60 per cent of students have been placed in design and manufacturing focused industries while another 20 per cent have secured offers for MS / Ph.D admission from reputed universities abroad such as Stanford, CMU, and UIUC, among others,” Prof. Gnanamoorthy said.
The institute which commenced its operations at the IIT-Madras (Mentor institute) campus will be commencing academic operations in entirety with residential accommodation in a phased manner from Melakottaiyur from August 2011. The State government has earmarked 50 acres for IIITD&M at Melakottayur village (off Vandalur - Kelambakkam Main Road) in Kancheepuram for a permanent campus. While the permanent campus construction activities are underway, modest buildings have been created to support the academic needs to a large extent and residential requirements in a phased manner, the director said.
IIITD&M will be acquiring state-of-the-art network infrastructure and connectivity of 1 Gbps to start with under the MHRD's initiative of National Mission on Education through Information & Communication Technology (NME-ICT), said Lt Col (Retd) Jayakumar, registrar of the institute.
