The uncovered openings in sewer drains on the pavement of the Madras Institute of Technology flyover, outside the Government Hospital, Tambaram, pose a threat to pedestrians. These openings in the drains are partially covered with huge concrete slabs.

“Last year, a calf was trapped in one of the openings and was rescued by the Tamil Nadu Fire and Rescue Services personnel. However, even after repeated representations, it remains uncovered ,” a pedestrian said.

“As the pavement is of the same height as the road, during rainy season it becomes difficult to identify the pavement. The authorities concerned should ensure that the openings are covered well,” K. Naveen Kumar, a visitor to the GH, Tambaram, said.

“As the service lane has a huge volume of vehicles, pedestrians have no choice but to walk on the pavement outside the hospital,” said K. Murugan, a resident of Chromepet.

K.M.R. Nissar Ahmed, chairman, Pallavapuram municipality, assured that steps would be taken to cover the openings in the canal-sewer drains.
