The defunct traffic signals at the junction of Velachery Main Road and Pallavaram-Thoraipakkam 200ft Radial Road seem to have failed to draw the attention of the authorities concerned.

The signals have remained non-functional for over six months, motorists taking the intersection point out.

With vehicles coming from Velachery, Tambaram, Medavakkam, Chromepet, and Rajiv Gandhi Salai, it is an extremely busy intersection. .

Rash driving at the intersection is said to aggravate the problem of non-functional traffic signals.

“Very often, motorists could be seen applying sudden brakes to avoid a collision. Pedestrians are the worst-affected,” A. Rebecca John, an IT professional and a resident of Camp Road, said.

Due to the defunct traffic signs, vehicular traffic flows are unhindered at the the intersection, which makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross the road.

Moreover, as there are no bus shelters on the thoroughfare leading to East Tambaram and Velachery, commuters who wait on the road for their buses, run helter-skelter to board the buses after sighting their route numbers.

“Despite the construction of a flyover (Velachery MRTS Railway Station and Dr. Kamakshi Memorial Hospital), traffic has remained chaotic in the vicinity.

Owing to the non-functioning of six traffic signals at the junction, traffic chaos prevails during rush hour.

The authorities concerned must take steps to repair the defunct signals,” S. Mahesh, a techie, said.
