Why would Radhakrishnan Parthiban make a film like Kathai Thiraikathai Vasanam Iyakkam ( KTVI ) and not act in it? “For one, trends have changed. Gone are the days when we took an elaborate family story spanning three generations and condensed it into two-and-a-half hours. Today’s trend is to take a simple notion, a small idea, and then construct a story around it; many recent films have become successes and, remember, that has always been the trend in Hollywood for generations,” explains Parthiban.

Parthiban has always been known for creating his own trends, and many of his filmmaking styles and character portrayals have been different, even path-breaking. “In KTVI , I will probably set in motion a new trend, but will I follow it again? I don’t know, because I have always believed in setting new benchmarks with each of my films, be it in direction or acting. I then move on to different levels,” says Parthiban.

KTVI doesnot tell a story like other films. It is about aspirations and dreams, hardships and heartbreaks, road blocks and speed breakers. “There’s no particular story. There’s this young couple; the hero is an aspiring director. How does he germinate an idea, work on the screenplay, come up with a good script and seek support for making a film? When a person goes to a theatre and watches a film, does he realise the amount of work that has gone into every stage of making the film? That in itself is a story I will depict in KTVI , in my style,” says Parthiban, denying that there’s a part of his own life in the script.

The talented actor-director says making a film is like boarding a train. “You begin your journey when you board a train. The train goes through several level crossings, tunnels, bridges and stations on its way. None of this actually concerns you, as you are only bothered about your destination. As a filmmaker, I can deliver the train to its final destination. What happens thereafter is of no consequence to the train; the audience takes over from there.” Parthiban’s latest will hit the screens on August 1.
