Based on a short story

Bombay Tailors, written and directed by Vinodkumar, an alumnus of the Sree Sankara University of Sanskrit, portrays the eventful life of Peerubhai, a tailor who was in great demand in his village till a few years ago. The play is based on a Telugu short story written by Mohammed Khadir Babu.

While narrating the life of Peeru from his childhood onwards, the play depicts the vast changes taking place in the social and economic life of Indians, especially in the era of globalisation.

The span of the play is nearly 60 years and the director brilliantly weaves in the dimension of time by referring to many events in the life of Peeru and and his spouse Muthumozhi.

For instance, the hero’s childhood days in the late fifties is when the movie Neelakuyil comes to a remote Malabar village.

When the hero moves to a city, the time and space is depicted with the help of popular Hindi songs from films and apparel of the seventies and eighties.

Peerubhai’s peaceful and uneventful life faces a hurdle when readymade dresses sold by multinational companies become popular. The play begins with a jobless Peerubhai turning up for an interview for a tailor’s job in a multinational firm that makes readymade garments.

The play unfolds how and why Peerubhai had to seek employment in a multinational through the narration of the hero and the heroine.

Produced by AH Shanawas, Bombay Tailors was presented by Athithi School of Performance, Edappally.

The event was organised by BEAME in association with Ernakulam Karayogam.
