• The chutti of Kathakali artistes has many stages. First is the valayam pidikkal, when the artist, using rice paste and gum, demarcates a space from one ear to the other. This marks the borders for the chutti artiste to work on.
  • Next comes theppu wherein the actor himself, barring, perhaps, the very senior ones, applies the basic colours on his face. And then the chutti artiste does his work on the face. Finally, the white paper ridges extending from one cheek to the other (adjacent to the ears) and covering the chin are stuck with the help of rice paste and gum.
  • Kathi, kari and thaadi characters have a lot of defining artwork for their make-up. After the make-up, they step into their elaborate costumes. Then they wear the headgear.
  • A yellow stone called manayola is ground to obtain the yellow pigment while red is from the mineral cinnabar. Green is made by grinding China blue and blending it with manayola. Adding more of blue to the manayola gives a deep blue used for the chutti of tribes woman and so on.
