When actor Jayasurya called ad jingle/music composer Krishna Raaj asking if he could compose a song for his son, Advaith’s web series, Oru Sarbath Kadha , Krishna was more than willing. He however had no clue that Dulquer Salman would end up crooning the song. “When Jaya-ettan (Jayasurya) called and told me that Dulquer Salman had agreed, it was completely unexpected...” says Krishna. The three-minute ‘Sarbath anthem’, released on October 8, has met with enthusiastic response.
The series is about a group of youngsters, and the song had to capture its youthful mood. “The name suggested something young, possibly with a dash of humour so I composed a peppy tune. To communicate how it would go as a song, my wife Laya wrote dummy lyrics for it and sent it. The lyrics were just dummy...but they liked the song in its entirety. So it was a double whammy!” says the 33-year-old composer. He has known the actor for a while.
The cherry on the cake was, of course, Dulquer singing. “I had sung the track for it, and we didn’t know who would render it. So it was quite the surprise when I heard Dulquer Salman would be singing it. Advaith is a big fan of his, and it was a dream come true for the kid too.” Advaith has written and directed the series; the song has been released by Muzik 24/7.
A trained Carnatic musician, he has been working in the advertisement industry, composing jingles, for the last 10 years. He has created music for close to 500-odd ad films which include brands such as Seematti, Jayalakshmi, Lazza ice cream, and Kalyan Silks, besides others; he has also assisted music director Ouseppachan for Three Kings . Before which he worked as a music director for a Chennai-based music studio. Laya has written the lyrics for some of Krishna’s ad films.
Given his experience composing jingle, where time is a luxury, he came up with the tune for Oru Sarbath Kadha in a couple of hours and the song was ready in a day. Initially a minute long, the actor asked him to extend the music to three minutes and add more of the Kochi slang. “Since I do this for a living, where I get only 30 seconds or so to create a catchy tune, it came in a jiffy especially since we had an idea what the song had to be about,” says Krishna. He is now working on a Hindi film, Anya , directed by a Malayali Simi Joseph, starring Atul Kulkarni and Raima Sen.
