Director, producer Pugazhendi Thangaraj, says his film Kadal Kuthiraigal tries to link two different issues faced by Tamils in the two sides of the Palk Strait.

“The first one is the struggle of Eelam Tamil and their protests. On this side of the sea, we find the protests of another kind... those against the Kudankulam nuclear power plant. Though their causes are different, their fights are the same. That’s what unites the two stories.”

Like the film, even the director faced two very different issues in his effort to release the film.

“At first, my film was meant to release in March, but that got postponed due to the strike. Then, we decided to release it on July 20. But the Producer’s Council asked me to reschedule, owing to the release of Ghajinikanth . I agreed and then changed dates to August 3. But the same thing has repeated again, with my film having to take on a bigger film like Ghajinikanth .”

The director also spoke about the issues he faced with the Censors. He adds, “The board asked me to make more than 20 cuts. As I was making these cuts, I realised that I had to cut a lot more for the film to make sense. But despite these challenges, I feel I have still made an important film.”

The film stars Thalaivasal Vijay, Rohini and Sridhanya.
