Gullu Dada is ready for his shot

A true-blue Hyderabadi knows where to find biryani, chai, haleem and of late been going ga ga over Gullu dada movies. Say Aaiin …and unanimous response would be ‘Gullu ishtyle ’. After having wrapped up Stepney with a successful run in single screen theatres for over two months, Gullu dada is back to work. Work with Ismail Bhai of Angrez fame is about to go on the floors and “The title of that movie will mostly be Ismail Vs Gull dada which will be produced and directed by Sharad Redd. Then I will begin shooting for Inspector Gullu ,” says the actor.

Ask for Adnan Sajid Khan at Masab Tank near Khaja function hall and no one will probably know who one is referring to. Say Gullu dada and even the youngest dweller will lead you to this actor/comedian’s house. So, much so that Adnan’s friends also call him Gullu dada now.

Adnan shot to fame as his character Gullu dada in Fun Aur Masti that released in 2007, it also marked Adnan’s debut in movies. “The character was so loved and appreciated that it remained with me,” recalls Adnan. After that, several independent episodes featuring Gullu dada have been released on YouTube and the actor himself produced four movies to highlight the Hyderabadi humour. With Pawan Kalyan announcing his support for Hyderabadi movies, Gullu and team hope for a bright future.

Gullu and team keep the Hyderabadi humour intact and the movies produced and released so far revolve around the happenings in the day-to-day life of the common man. To stay ‘close to reality’, all the movies which feature Gullu have the Old City for their location and life and lifestyle of the people. “The dialect used is Deccani Urdu and it is attractive.

After the movies go off the screen, they get viewed by more than 3-4 lakh people on the internet. The reason they are viewed and enjoyed is because of the simplicity of our scripts, the everyday bizarre nonsense that happens to each one of us.

Above all our movies are family entertainers and our audience also include children. One factor that decides a movie is its audience and when children enjoy a movie, it is judged as good,” he explains.

Adnan wasn’t destined to be an actor. After having worked in Qatar, he returned to manage a few businesses that he had set up. “Movies toh aiseich ho gaya . We come from a very orthodox family and acting in movies didn’t fit in our scheme of things. However, I was keen and it was a struggle to make that choice. After four movies and the wonderful response, things are favourable at home,” he laughs.

Adnan’s businesses are now on lease and he says he is happy doing what he is doing now. Otherwise a passionate singer, Adnan loves to hum Kishore Kumar and Md Rafi songs at all times. “My favourite Kishore Kumar song is Tu kaheto and Rafi song being dil ke jharokhein mein .

Does he intend to sing in his movies as well? “Singing is an art and right now it’s the wave of Sufi music. I don’t think I am gifted to sing, main gana gaaye tohpublic marti merku.
