One dead as violence mars polling in Nagaland

Sporadic incidents of violence were reported from Nagaland as the State went to the polls on Tuesday.

One person was shot dead during a clash between BJP and NPF supporters in Akuluto constituency in Zunheboto district.

“Death of one man, reportedly shot in the chest, is confirmed. We have asked the DC and SP of Zunheboto district to provide details,” the State's additional CEO Moa Aier told The Hindu.

Two persons were reportedly injured when India Reserve Battalion personnel opened fire to quell the violence by supporters of the two parties, some of whom were armed.

Earlier in the day, a bottle grenade was hurled at polling booth number 20 at Tizit. One person was seriously injured in the attack.

The core committee of the Naga Tribal Hohos and Civil Organisations, a conglomeration of tribal and civil groups, has called for a boycott of the Assembly elections demanding a solution to the 20-year-old Naga issue.

However, people are coming out in large numbers to cast their ballot. About 37 per cent votes were polled in the State till 12 noon.
