Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi on Monday lashed out at Narendra Modi, the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prime ministerial candidate, for “insulting” her father, the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi.
“They have insulted my martyred father on the soil of Amethi. The people of Amethi will not forgive them for their actions,” Ms. Vadra said in response to a statement by Mr. Modi while campaigning in the constituency for his party’s candidate, Smriti Irani.
During his speech, Mr. Modi said Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi was following the path of his father in practising the “politics of anger.”
“They also say Rahul is walking on the path of Rajiv Gandhi. He is. Once Rajiv Gandhi insulted the CM of Andhra Pradesh,” Mr. Modi said while comparing it to Rahul Gandhi’s “nonsense” remark on an ordinance passed by the Cabinet of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. Mr. Modi was referring to the “public insult” of the former Andhra Chief Minister T. Anjaiah by Rajiv Gandhi at the Hyderabad airport.
Responding to Mr. Modi’s jibes, Ms. Vadra said her party workers would give a befitting response to the “BJP’s petty politics.”
