Flood-hit Assam village boycotts polls

Published - April 06, 2019 09:24 pm IST - GUWAHATI

Residents of Paschim Itabhita village under western Assam’s Barpeta Lok Sabha constituency have decided not to vote on April 23. The reason: MPs and MLAs representing their area have not found solutions to the problems caused by annual floods despite many promises being made. The villagers said that pleas to construct a concrete embankment to prevent flooding and ensuring better communication in the area have fallen on deaf ears. The main candidates vying for the seat are Kumar Deepak Das of Asom Gana Parishad, Abdul Khaleque of Congress and Rafiqul Islam of All India United Democratic Front.
