The rupee depreciated by 6 paise to trade at Rs. 49.90 against the dollar on the Interbank Foreign Exchange market in early trade Monday, on fresh demand from importers for the American currency.

Forex dealers said weakness in euro and other Asian currencies against the dollar overseas also weighed on the rupee’s value.

Fresh demand for the U.S. currency from importers stepped up dollar purchases for making payments, putting pressure on the rupee, they added.

The local currency had gained 44 paise to close below the 50-mark at 49.84/85 against the U.S. currency in the previous session.

Meanwhile, the BSE benchmark Sensex gained 268.86 points, or 1.54 per cent, to 17,772.10 in early trade.
