Of the over 16,500 recognised start-ups as on March 1, 2019, nearly half were from the tier-2 and tier-3 cities, as per the Economic Survey 2018-19.
Additionally, about 46% of these start-ups, across 499 districts in the country, have at least one woman director.
The Economic Survey showed that Maharashtra with nearly 19% of the recognised start-ups tops the list of state-wise distribution of recognized Start-ups in India. Maharashtra, is followed by Karnataka (14.67%), Delhi (13.38%), Uttar Pradesh (8.23%), Telangana (5.59%), Haryana (5.33%), Tamil Nadu (5.18%), Gujarat (5.17%), Kerala (4%) and West Bengal (3.03%).
As regards to industry-wise distribution of recognised start-ups, IT Services accounted for around 15% such start-ups, followed by Healthcare & Life sciences (8.97%), Education (8.07%), Professional & Commercial Services (4.15%), Food & Beverages (4.01%), Agriculture (3.73%), Finance Technology (3.10%), Renewable Energy (3.09%), Internet of Things (3.05%) and Technology Hardware (3.04%).
“Start-ups drive economic growth, create employment and foster a culture of innovation,” the Survey said.
