A record haul of smuggled goods valued at nearly Rs. 14.5 crores was made in Bombay region during 1967 by the Collectorates of Customs and Central Excise, the Anti-Corruption Bureau of Maharashtra Police and the Central Bureau of Investigation, the four preventive agencies which curb smuggling activities. This is more than three times the 1966 figure of about Rs. 4.5 crores. Official sources said through the co-ordinated efforts of these agencies, they had succeeded in breaking at least 40 major smugglers’ rings in Bombay in the last 12 months. They had also arrested hundreds involved in smuggling.
