From the Archives (Sept. 7, 1918): Sale of salt

September 07, 2018 12:15 am | Updated 12:43 am IST

We understand that the authorities have completed arrangements to secure the selling of salt in the Madras City at 1 anna 6 pies per measure. From yesterday [September 6] issues are being made from the Salt Depot to a number of merchants with definite guarantees taken from them as regards the retail selling price and it is hoped that the serious situation which Madras had to experience in the immediate past will not recur. We share in that hope, but we consider it desirable that the Government should issue a communique embodying the results of their inquiry into the causes of the high price of salt and detailing the safe-guards taken against a recurrence of the panic.
