Independent body to fight graft

The Union Home Minister, Mr. G.L. Nanda, announced in the Lok Sabha on April 27 that in future, cases of corruption at the political level would be entrusted to an independent agency. Mr. Nanda, who made the announcement during his reply to the debate on the budget demands of his Ministry, said the Prime Minister and he had come to this conclusion after the “Orissa lesson.” Mr. Nanda explained why corruption was linked with administrative reforms and outlined the steps taken by the Government to strengthen the administration to meet the new economic and social needs.

Air war with China averted

India refrained from aerial action against the Communist Chinese during their invasion of India in 1962 at the instance of the United States, it was disclosed today [April 27]. The disclosure came in a letter to the New York Times written by Prof. Galbraith, former American Ambassador to India. Prof. Galbrath’s main theme in the letter as a plea for suspension of American bombing of North Viet Nam was on the ground that such bombing achieves no military objective.
