The Sessions Judge of Allahabad delivered judgment to-day [April 9] in the case in which Nazim Hussain, a police constable, was charged with attempted murder of Mr. W. Godfrey by stabbing him in the back as he was seated on a bench in Alfred Park. The Judge found the accused guilty and sentenced him to five years’ rigorous imprisonment. The Allahabad High Court has confirmed the sentence of six months’ rigorous imprisonment and fine passed on Harbans Lal, a member of the District Board of Basti, who was asked to collect subscription for war loan and misappropriated certain items collected by him. Mr. H.G. Smith, Sessions Judge on special duty in Jaunpur, has been engaged for some time in hearing cases which arose out of Bakrid riot at Chirauri in the course of which five Oolabas received hurt and the houses of some Mahomedans were looted. It is alleged by the prosecution that about three to four thousand Hindus took part in the riots and they did not disperse till the police opened fire, as a result of which some persons received fatal injuries. There are over one hundred accused and the case is likely to last some time.
