Congress gets majority at Centre

The Congress has been returned to power at the Centre, but with a greatly reduced majority. With 505 results declared for the 521-member Lok Sabha to-night [Feb. 26, New Delhi], the Congress had obtained a lead of 55 over the combined Opposition and Independents. The Party position is: Congress 280, Swatantra 43, Jan Sangh 34, D.M.K. 25, S.S.P. 23, C.P.I. 22, C.P.I. (Marxist) 19, P.S.P. 10, Republican one, other parties and Independents 48.
