Chennai will become the first Indian city to host the World bridge team championships when the 42nd edition is held at the ITC Grand Chola from September 26 to October 10.

The championships will be held in three categories — open, women and seniors — with 22 teams in each category. With each team having six members, almost 700 players from across 35 countries, including powerhouses the USA, China, Italy and Australia, will be participating.

World Bridge Federation president Gianarrigo Rona said Goa was initially considered for the biennial event but the availability of a huge hall in Chennai clinched the issue.

Meanwhile, the 13th HCL bridge championship, with a Rs. 16 lakh prize money, will be held from August 20-23 in Delhi with over 400 players participating.
