Rowing: Bhokanal, Navneet are the best

Army Sports Control Board’s (Army SCB) Dattu Baban Bhokanal won the 2000m men’s single scull gold medal at the 36th senior National rowing championships at the Army Rowing Node, College of Military Engineering (CME), Pune on Friday.

As the only rower who qualified for the Rio Olympics, the 26-year-old Bhokanal finished ahead of Services Sports Control Board’s Sawarn Singh and Madhya Pradesh’s Saleem Khan.

Punjab’s Navneet Kaur won the women’s single scull race ahead of the Rowing Federation of India’s Yamini and Odisha’s Sanjukta Dung Dung.

The nationals is a selection trial for future international meets, including the Asian Games to be held in Jakarta and Palembang, in Indonesia from August 18 to September 2, 2018.

“There will be 15 events (eight for men and seven for women) at the Asian Games in Indonesia and India has the option to chose any ten,” said Ismail Baig, the chief national coach.

Eight finals in the men’s and four in women’s (all 2000m) were completed on Friday.The heats for the 500m events will be held on Saturday and the finals on Sunday

Men: 1. Dattu Baban Bhokanal (Army SCB), 2. Sawarn Singh (Services SCB), 3. Saleem Khan (Madhya Pradesh).
