Om Seth: ‘I was born to swim’

Discipline and a stress-free life help octogenarian Om Seth be a champion swimmer

At 82 years, when most people would like a quiet life surrounded by family and grand children, Om Seth remains as enthusiastic as a teenager in the face of a challenge. It was his participation at the national-level competitions held by the Swimming Federation of India, a decade ago that egged him on to participate at the international level. At the World Masters Games held in Auckland, New Zealand this April, he was the oldest participant ever in freestyle swimming and finished as the finalist in the categories he participated in.

A chance event led to his string of successes. He recalls, “In 2005, I was swimming at the club and my coach mentioned that I could try at the competitive level. At the Rajkot games, I won the silver medal which motivated me to participate and give my best in more games.” Though a swimmer since his youth, the entrepreneur never thought the sport would result in such success for him.

An asthma patient, Om Seth does not let any adversity stand in his way. In 2007, at the Mumbai games, when he didn’t win any medal, he was back at the drawing board devising new strategies including developing stamina and changing his style. That did the trick, ensuring that he finished on the podium the following years. The grandfather of three reveals the secret of his success: “My win encouraged me no end. They improved my health (as I was training zealously), brought me recognition and rewards. I have realized that age is just a chronological factor. I don’t want to be labelled old or dependent; I’m leading an active and fruitful life.”

Strict discipline helps this octogenarian stay fit. His mornings start at 6 amwith a walk in KBR Park and half hour with a laughter club, followed by a swim for an hour. He also trains in Tai-chi over weekends. Not too fussy about diet, the only precaution he takes is ensure a light dinner, which usually consists of only a soup and toast.

A relaxed attitude to life devoid of stress keeps him going, he shares, “Laughter is the secret ingredient in life. Mental calmness is required to ensure that you take everything in your stride. At this age, I’m vulnerable to many things but I ensure that I maintain discipline as routine is important. At times I feel lethargic but exert myself so that I get back into groove.” His wife, theatre personality Rashmi Seth adds, “He is the handyman around the house fixing everything from furniture to fuse, and even drives around. He is always active ensuring that he stays happy and healthy.”

Looking forward to participate in a national swimming event in November and another in Russia next year, Om Seth says he is eager to win more laurels. He confesses with characteristic joie de verve, “I believe that I was born to swim so am preparing each day. There is a lot of competition in elderly events too, so am fine tuning my strategy and changing strokes for the upcoming events.” His advice to both youngsters and those young at heart is to take care of their health, indulge in physical activity and stay away from stress. An exemplary example in living life to the fullest, one looks forward to Seth’s continued success on and off the pool!
