India had a mixed day on the 10th day of competitions in the 17th Asian Games here on Monday.
KABADDI:
Indian men’s kabaddi team thrashed Thailand 66-27 in a preliminary Group A match of the 17th Asian Games at the Songdo Global University Gymnasium in Incheon on Monday.
Defending champions, India dominated the match from the start and raced to a 29-15 lead till the first half by ousting 22 Thai players.
With two lona points and five bonus points, the Rakesh Kumar-led Indian showed a lot of class and quality.
The Indian team with a starting line-up of Rakesh, Anup Kumar, Manjeet Chillar, Ajay Thakur, Navneet Gautam and Rajguru Subramaniam, displayed vintage raiding skills and strong defensive tactics in the second half to claim 37 points compared to Thailand’s 12.
The proof of Indian team’s aggression was the six lona points they clinched in the second half.
They knocked out 26 Thai athletes and collected five bonus points to take first position in the group and also cement their place in the semifinals.
The Indian team will play arch-rivals Pakistan in their final match of the group on Tuesday.
The winner of the match will decide the top two places in the group stage. As of now, India is ahead of Pakistan thanks to a better point’s difference.
BASKETBALL:
After a disappointing few days, the women cagers finally had reason to smile after they beat Mongolia 68-50 to set up a fifth-place play-off against Kazakhstan.
CANOEING & KAYAKING:
Gaurav Tomar, who had topped the C1 1000 semifinals, found the going tough and finished seventh in a time of 4:17:389s. In K1 1000, Albert Raj Selvaraj ended eighth after clocking 3:59.933 to cover the distance.
Ajit Kumar Sha and Raju Rawat clocked 4:00.800 to finish fifth in C2 1000, while Ragina Kiro, Biju Anusha, Soniya Devi and Nanao Devi Ahongshangbam managed 1:52.022 to sign off at the seventh spot in K4 500m.
In K4 1000, Ajit Singh, Sunny Kumar, Ramesh Golli, Chingching Singh Arambam ended eighth, after clocking 3:15.291, in the men’s final.
In K2 500m women’s final, A. Ragina Kiro and Nanao Devi clocked 1:55.351 to languish at the bottom, while Jamesboy Singh Oinam too finished last in the C1 200m men’s final with a timing of 43.981s.
TABLE TENNIS:
The Indian paddlers had a bitter-sweet day as the mixed doubles team of Achanta Sharath Kamal and Poulomi Ghatak crashed out, while the women’s doubles team got the better of Pakistan in a round-of-32 match.
Sharath Kamal and Poulomi lost to the Thai duo of Padasak Tanviriyavechakul and Suthasiniin Sawettabut 11-6, 11-9, 16-14 at the Suwon Gymnasium.
Poulomi then combined with Ankita Das to thrash Shabnam Bilal and Rahila Kashif 11-5, 11-1, 11-7.
In mixed doubles, A. Amalraj and Madhurika Suhas Patkar got past Mongolia’s Munkh Orgil Batbayar and Enkhjin Barkhas 12-10, 11-3, 11-6 to enter the pre-quarterfinals.
In women’s singles, Ankita humbled Menwah Alshammari of Kuwait 11-4, 11-9, 11-3, 11-9 to move into the round-of-32. In doubles, Neha Aggarwal and Madhurika made it to the last 16 after easing past Aishath Nisa and Aminath Shiura Shareef of Maldives 11-3, 11-6, 11-2.
VOLLEYBALL:
India’s male spikers lost their second consecutive Group E play-off encounter as they went down to Qatar 25-20, 25-20, 25-20 in 70 minutes. The result ended India’s chances of making it to the knock-out rounds.
