It was in the Czech Republic that P. Shri Nivetha shot to fame with a silver in the 24th Meeting of Shooting Hopes four years ago. The 10m air pistol gold and the mixed air pistol silver with Amanpreet Singh in the Grand Prix of Liberation international shooting competition — in the Czech Republic, again! — has further underlined her potential.
Nivetha had been hunting for a medal ever since she finished fifth in the Commonwealth championship in Brisbane in 2017, a test event for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast. The gold-silver show was just reward for this economics graduate from PSGCAS (Coimbatore) who was training in Pune because of the better facilities there.
The 22-year-old, sponsored by Olympic Gold Quest, will travel to Germany for her next international assignment before figuring in two events in India.
“These performances matter a lot for the Asian Games (August) and World championship (September), and I just want to go out there and give it my best shot,” the shooter told The Hindu over phone from Plzen.
About the number of shots getting increased from 40 to 60 in women’s air pistol to maintain gender equality, she said: “I am getting used to it, it’s just a matter of time.”
