Heavy fine against Mutu confirmed

An international sports tribunal has rejected Romanian footballer Adrian Mutu’s appeal against a massive fine imposed by his former club Chelsea, Italian media reported on Monday.

The Swiss-based Court of Arbitration for Sport confirmed the 17.2 million euros (21 million dollars) fine Mutu received for damaging the club’s image after he tested positive for cocaine in 2005.

The Fiorentina striker, 31, was sacked by Chelsea and banned for seven months. He is currently banned until October after failing a drugs test in January.

Victor Becali, an agent for Mutu, was quoted as saying the footballer’s lawyers might consider bringing the case before the European Court of Justice.
