The Football Association (FA) is in touch with Borussia Dortmund for the release of striker Jadon Sancho in time to join the England national team at the U-17 World Cup.

The youngster was a notable omission in the 20 players listed by coach Steven Cooper. “We are working closely with Borussia Dortmund and confident that he will play a part in the World Cup,” he said.

Sancho is an integral part of England’s attacking unit, as he displayed fine form in the European U-17 Championships with five goals and five assists.

The youngster’s absence will be felt against opponents with defence tighter than New Zealand against whom England won 3-2 in a practice game on Sunday. Chelsea’s Callum Odoi grabbed the opportunity at the Mumbai Football Arena against New Zealand. Odoi, on the left flank, showed trickery on the ball which will make him a marked player.

Delight to watch

He was a delight to watch, tormenting his marker numerous times with body movement and speed.

He also twice set up Emile Row, who failed to score while Rhian Brewster (two goals) displayed poaching instincts.

The result:

England 3 (Rhian Brewster 2, Marc Guehi) bt New Zealand 2 (Oliver Whyte, Elijah Just).

Penalty-kicks: England 4 bt New Zealand 3.
